3 Sunflowers by Lisa Goesling

I wonder if I am drawn to the black backgrounds of Scratchbords® because I love the act of discovery. Nature invites us to experience its beauty at face value…but dig deeper and you’ll find the most incredible surprises. Did you know there are approximately 14,000 different species of mushrooms? I’ve had a lifelong obsession with the structure of mushrooms, now I realize I’ve only begun to scratch the surface. Multiple Mushrooms is filled with a few varieties meandering across the page. They weave in and out of outlines of shapes, some earth colored and some as vibrant as a flower. I like to introduce texture into my backgrounds contrasting with the smooth black surface of Scratchbords®. Look closely and you’ll see the heavy black acrylic added in at the end of the process. 3 Sunflowers has that same technique, providing depth to my etchings of dried sunflowers. The rich earth tones pop from the page leaving fine details to play a supportive role. I find transforming natures forms into abstract shapes immensely interesting.
